What is IP?
|
Trademarks
A business will make use of
trade mark to identify its goods or services. A
trade mark could be
a word, logo, name, signature, letter, or even a combination of these.
A trade
mark represents the reputation of a business in some sense; therefore
it might
be the most valuable asset of the business.
Patents
A
patent protects new
inventions.
It covers how things work, what they do, how they do it, what they
are
made of and how they are made. It gives you the exclusive right to
make, use
and sell the invention.
Designs
Design is the appearance of products such as the outlook of LCD TV,
telephones, MP3-players, jewelry and watches. Registered designs
protect only the external appearance of products but do not apply to
how things work. Protection for how a product works may be available
under patent
law.
Copyrights
Copyright is a protection that covers published editions of literary,
musical, dramatic or artistic works are fixed in a tangible or material
form. Copyright is an automatic rights and it arises when a work is
created. Unlike other intellectual property rights such as patents,
trademarks and industrial design, it is not necessary to register a
copyright in Hong Kong in order to get protection under the law.
